An HVAC filter is a filter that is used in a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The filter increases the efficiency and longevity of the HVAC system by protecting it from dust and airborne particles. It is therefore an integral, yet often overlooked part of the system. In addition to protecting the HVAC system from damage, some HVAC filters are designed to improve the quality of the interior air. HVAC filters work by providing a physical barrier between the air intake and the moving parts of the HVAC system.
Pre-Filters: Pre-Filters sift out the largest particles which will be running through your air purifier, which leaves the smallest particles to your main filter. These large particulates in the air include things like pet fur, dust, and a lot of the other things you can see floating around in the air.
MERV Filters: There are 16 MERV values, from 1 to 16, with the tested filter efficiency increasing as the MERV number increases. Filters are tested against 12 size ranges of particles, with the smallest range being around 0.3 micrometers, and the largest range around 10 micrometers. MERV 13 to 16 are effective at controlling airborne bacteria, most tobacco smoke and pollutants released through sneezing. Applicable in general surgery suites, smoking lounges and commercial buildings with superior HVAC systems.
